WHY BOTHER?
Rev. Dr. Laurel Hallman , preaching
She wrote Living by Heart, the widely-used guide to UU daily spiritual practice. She succeeded John as Senior Minister of First Unitarian in Dallas in 1987 and built it into one of the largest, most generous churches in our movement. Laurel left there after 22 years to run for UUA President, a job she was spared. It’s worth the bother to come hear her. This Sunday kicks off our annual canvass. If you don’t want to be bothered with a call from a canvasser, please be present! You will have a chance to easily make your commitment to the 2010-11 budget. John Buehrens will conduct the service. Canvass co-chairs Bruce Keltie and Gail Hedges will take part. And the music will include a rich array of musical offerings from within this creative congregation. You’ll not only hear why we bother with church community here, you’ll also be glad you came!
Children go directly to classes.

Can We Change? Should We?
John Buehrens, Minister
Can First Parish adapt to changes in the lives of those who look to us as a spiritual home? Should we? The latest issue of UU World, our denomi-national magazine, asks this. John Buehrens also took up related issues in his “State of the Parish Address” on Feb. 28. Is it true, as he’s said, that “religious liberals first say ‘Yes we can!’ — and then refuse to change?” What changes would you like to see us make to address a changing world?
Children check in downstairs for
Children's Chapel followed by classes.

ILLUSIONS
John Buehrens, Preaching
The great progressive preacher William Sloane Coffin often said to young idealists, “If you find yourself becoming disillusioned, try asking yourself what illusions you held in the first place — and why.” Our culture has rarely been more disillusioned. Could it be that we have all been entertaining illusions? Recently John moderated a discussion with Chris Hedges, late of the NY Times, author of a new book, Empire of Illusion: The End of Literacy and the Triumph of Spectacle. Buddhists see all illusion as forms of maya, things that are ephemeral, ultimately unreal. Western religion speaks of forms of idolatry. Could it be that we are knee-deep in both? The music will be very special. Join us!

A New-Fashioned Hymn Sing
Singing the Journey
Vivien Montgomery, Music Director
This is for the Choir! This is for our elders! This is for old UUs! This is for newcomers! This is for young adults and teens and kids, as well as adults. We will spend a whole hour in the Meetinghouse singing hymns from Singing the Journey, the new UUA supplementary hymnal. There are hymns and songs here from a whole variety of cultures. Some are easy. Some need work. Let’s expand our collective repertoire!
